The State of the World's Children 2000 report from the
United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Who: Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, (D-San Francisco), a prominent Congressional spokesman for children's rights and the ranking Democrat on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations; Deborah Alvarez-Rodriguez, Director, San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Their Families; and Dani Taylor, Executive Director of Oakland Healthy Start will appear at a news conference sponsored by RESULTS and a coalition of community groups.

What: The release of UNICEF's State of the World's Children 2000 report. This year's report presents UNICEF's bold new vision for children in the 21st century. It is written as a call to governments, UN agencies, civil society, the private sector and children to renew their commitment to helping children realize their rights as set out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. SOWC 2000 is a tool for advocacy which highlights both the unfinished business in achieving goals set out at the 1990 World Summit for Children and the daunting recent challenges to the achievement of these goals - HIV/AIDS and armed conflict and deepening poverty. RESULTS and coalition children's advocates organizations are hosting press conferences worldwide and in 11 US cities for this annual UNICEF report to call attention to local and global efforts to meet children's basic human needs.

Why: UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund is the most renowned and respected international development organization. The State of the World's Children report is issued to draw international attention to the challenges facing children and to press for sustained action to protect and promote their well-being. UNICEF advocates the cause of children and human development by compiling and making readily available information on the situation of children, the performance of countries in fulfilling the goals of the World Summit for Children, the protection of children's rights, and its own contributions in programs for children. The launches and the report are intended to help the media, governments and donors become more familiar with urgent issues impacting children and to encourage them to join the advocacy efforts as outlined in the report.

When: Monday, December 13th, 10:00-11:00 am

Where: San Francisco City Hall Press Room #305

Press Kits with the report and a B-roll videotape are available
